The Perfect Circle/Sealed Poer Division of Dana Corporation operatures sixteen high capacity, hard chrome plating tanks at two facilitis in Michihgan for finishing automotive piston rings. Priror to 1996, tanks were ventilated through sixteen packed-bed scrubbers, exhanusting 170,000 cfm through sixtenn stacks. Water consumption exceeded 10,000 gallons per day. To comply with the EPA NESHAPS and potential reductions in the OSHA PEL, to: (1) reduce the size of the exhaust and control equipment; (2) reduce the number of stacks to be tested; (3) reduce water and electrical power consumption; (4) reduce make-up air heating costs; (5) provide for closed-loop operation; and (6) improve the capature and control of tank emissions. This paper documents how these objective were achieved through the sue of partial tank covers, and a fully integrated process control system at the Muskegon, MI facility which operates twelve of the sixteen systems. SImilar objectives were met for a four-tank system at the St. Johns, MI facility.
