In television (and especially in documentary filmmaking) we are still at the beginning of discrete multichannel-audio-production and -transmission. Intense training is necessary to cope with the load of new challenges the sound engineer has to face out in the field, in the edit room and on the mixing stage. With carefully crafted soundtracks the impact and intensity of a production can be dramatically enhanced, maybe even leading to equalness of audio and picture in television ― something that is already the case in the movie industry to a far greater extent. The author has presented techniques and experiences he has gained during his work in the ORF (Austrian Broadcasting Corporation) that hopefully show some of the possibilities but also problems of the new format. Multichannel-audio has still a long way to go, but (following the success of DVD-Video) constant occupation with the expanded toolbox and promotion of the new format can lead to enhanced quality and ― last, but not least ― to increased appreciation of the consumer.
