Insect Pests of Soybean In Brazil and Integrated Pest Management Approaches for Their Control

Soybean crop has increased dramatically in area and production during the 1970's in southern temperate and subtropical regions of Brazil, expanding to tropical regions (Central and Northern regions) afterwards, as a result of new varieties, especially those of long juvenile period, Locally developed for these regions. Currently; soybean is cultivated in ca. 14 million hectares in Brazil with a mean yield of ca. 2.6 metric tons/ha, and about US$ 6.0 billion in exports. The reasons for the dramatic increase in production and yield of soybean in Brazil are: the rapid organization of the private sector for attending the increasing international demand for soybean grain and meal; adequate government policies to support the rapid increase of soybean production; and the research and technological inputs by Embrapa (Brazilian Organization for Agricultural Research) as well as other research organizations in timely providing the extension and the private sector with new varieties, sound techniques for producing high quality seeds, appropriate cultural practices for different regions, and pest control techniques for weeds, diseases, and insect management. In this short review, the major insect pests of soybean in Brazil and the integrated pest management. In the (IPM) approaches adapted or developed in the country will be discussed.
