Desipite de fact that we can now publish documents easily, the problem of effectively retrieving relevant documents is stillunsolved. Retrieving Chinese documents raises more problems than for European languages because of the problem of segmentation. In this paper, we analyze the approaches used in IR for European and Chinese languages, and we show that there is a parallel between them. This comparison shows that Chinese IR naturally uses several advanced approaches proposed for IR in European languages.
