Physicochemical and electrochemical properties of sulfolane were tested for potential use as a solvent in lithium batteries. It is considerably less ignitable than the solvents that are used in lithium batteries now. Its higher freezing point can be lowered by additives (lithium salts and some other solvents) sufficiently below 0 ℃. Due to its higher viscosity, its specific conductivity is lower, to a value roughly 15 % less in comparison to propylene carbonate. The conductivity of solutions is lower below the freezing point of solvent itself.
