Preparation of Y_2O_3-ZrO_2 Ceramic Nanopowders by Surface Doping

Weakly agglomerated nanocrystalline Y_2O_3-ZrO_2 powders were prepared by dispersing Y_2O_3 on the surface of ZrO_2 nanopowder (7.3nm) derived from gas phase synthesis. The result shows that the tetragonal contents in surface-doped ZrO_2 increase with grain growth or heating temperature, which is unlike the undoped and the bulk doped ZrO_2. The stabilization of the tetragonal phase may result from the incorporation of Y~(3+) cations from ZrO_2 surface into its lattice. Moreover, surface-doped powders has a strong tendency to improve the anti-coarsening ability and suppress grain growth, especially at higher doping levels or/and at lower heating temperatures.
