Design planning is an integral part of Physical Design Process for technology nodes of 65nm andrnbelow. As technology nodes shrink and designs get larger, design planning and design feasibilityrnstudies are rapidly becoming a bottleneck in physical design process. Large number of objects withrnincomplete constraints, library models and netlists pose a significant challenge to design planningrnand implementation. Challenges include modeling of physical effects, design feasibility andrnprototyping, and constraint generation for implementation tools with reasonable accuracy andrnruntimes. Lower power and variability aware design methodologies need to be considered whilerndesign planning. More of the designs today are implemented hierarchically to handle large numberrnof instances, and geographically dispersed design teams, further adding complexities to planningrnand implementation. This paper will present the role of design planning, challenges with respect torntoday’s and future designs and potential solutions.
