Composition and Isolation of Carbohydrates in Oilseed Meal and Processing By - Products

Mature, dry seeds of various plant species contain different soluble carbohydrates, predominantly the oligosaccharides of sucrose and raffinose saccharides (1). In contrast to raffinose saccharides, galactinol, 1-O-alpha-D-galactopyranosyl-D-myo-inositol (2), is present at relatively low levels and is only described in a few seed tissues, such as soybean (3-5) and castor bean (6). Galactinol is an essential intermediate in the biosynthesis o raffinose saccharides in plant tissues (7) and is unavailable commercially. In a previous study, we have isolated and characterized galactinol fro mdefatted castor oilseed meal, an industrial processing by-product afte oil extraction (6). The objectives of this study were to characterize the soluble carbohydrate fraction of some common oilseeds, expand the isolation scale of galactinol from castor meal, and to examine the possibility of isolating galactinol from other oilseed meals.
