Risk Reduction Strategies for Internet Visible Systems

The Internet offers worldwide access, availability and anonymity to individuals who are well intentioned as well as to those who harbor malicious and criminal intentions. Internet Visible Systems include all systems that are accessible through the Internet These systems are exposed to a steady stream of: probes, scans, threats, viruses, worms and denial of service attacks which originate from the Internet connection. This paper explores current practices for providing information security to the enterprise and identifies design strategies to extend the effectiveness of these technologies to further reduce the risk associated with a breach of the enterprise's systems.
