The competitiveness brings to a continuous development of new products and processes, which is often opposed by the slowing down of the characteristic improvement and by the subsequent market trend to the saturation. The activity of redesign, especially in such a context, has become a crucial point in order to try to increase the competitiveness of a product. Therefore a similar activity goes continuously fed and brought ahead through the use of design tools which accelerate the design process. These tools are methodical and structured approaches, which permit to reduce to the minimum the possibility of identifying inopportune design modifications which would involve the risk of the bad success of the product, and the simulation techniques, mat make possible the forecast of the behaviour in exercise. In this paper the possibility to reduce the mass of a semitrailer, modifying its structure is analysed. Various solutions have been considered, also characterized by new topology and/or materials: The solution characterised by a structural load-carrying platform in composite material has been chosen, whose mass has been minimised with an optimised design procedure using simulation tools.
