Effects of hydrodemetallization (HDM) operation conditions (temperature, LHSV and H_2/Oil) on the subsequent deactivation of hydrodesulfurization (HDS) catalysts were examined using Kuwait dtmospheric residue and the deactivation mechanism was discussed. It was found that there existed an optimum HDM temperature around 673 K to suppress the deactivation of HDS catalysts. The effect of LHSV on the HDS satalyst fouling depended on an HDM teperature, while that of Ha/Oil was little observed.
