The use of mesh-reinforced cement boards as a fundamental component in exterior wall construction and finish systems in light-frame buildings is described. Two types of exterior wall construction and finish systems, namely, Direct-Applied Exterior Finish System (DEFS) and the Exterior Insulation and Finish System (EIFS), in which the mesh-reinforced cement boards are commonly used, are introduced. Appropriate generic system designs are presented for both of the aforementioned exterior wall systems. Further, the properties and distinctive features of mesh-reinforced cement boards that make them a product of choice in exterior wall construction and finish system designs are highlighted. In this regard, it has been elaborated that the mesh-reinforced cement boards are lightweight, easily installed, weather durable, dimensionally stable, mold and mildew resistant, and non-combustible. It is further shown that the above distinctive properties of mesh-reinforced cement boards in combination with their excellent bonding substrate feature make them extremely suitable and desirable for application in exterior wall construction and finish systems. Finally, case studies and project examples demonstrating the actual field use of mesh-reinforced cement boards in exterior wall construction and finish systems are presented. These case studies and project examples further reaffirm the usefulness of mesh-reinforced cement boards and the unique place that they occupy in exterior wall system designs used in a wide variety of building constructions.
