A new approach for enhancing the effectiveness of XP projects through effective XP training based on reports from the field

The aim of this paper is to highlight the importance of training methods in the agile software development practices like Extreme Programming (XP). The areas covered include a brief re-visit to the XP practices and the experiences reported so far. To practice XP effectively, XP training courses should be designed and taught in the best possible way. Understanding the background of the people who are being trained in XP is also important, Are we training students in the software engineering courses at the educational institutions or are we training software developers who are experienced with heavy weight traditional methodologies? Or are we training the management that was so process-intensive in the past? These groups should be trained in XP in different ways. The students will not be able to appreciate XP unless they are aware of the pitfalls of the traditional methods. The second and the third group will be sceptical about XP because of lack of standardisation and the risks that they are unaware of in XP. We analyse some of the universities/industrial training case studies reported in IEEE and ACM and summarise a set of best practices for effective XP training in both universities and workplace.
