摘要

There has been a substantial amount of research on two different but related problems: estimating distances of perceived objects ("how far away is that thing?") and estimating traveled distance ("how far did I just walk?"). For instance, Lappe et al [2007] recently examined a "leaky path integration" model to account for travel distance judgments in a virtual environment. In preparation for planned future studies comparing travel distance estimation in real and virtual environments, we conducted a pilot experiment involving a simple travel distance estimation task and two measurement settings. One measurement setting depends on accuracy of distance perception in the real world while the other depends on accuracy of distance perception in virtual environments.
