Zirconium dioxide based catalysts were synthesized by mechanical mixing method and evaluated for the direct synthesis of isobutene and isobutane (i-C_4) from CO hydrogenation. The acid-base properties of the catalysts were altered by varying the content of additives including Al_2O_3 and KOH on ZrO_2. A CO conversion of 30% was achieved at 698K, 5.0MPa over 23%Al_2O_3-0.5%KOH-ZrO_2. Meanwhile, the selectivity to i-C_4 in total hydrocarbons was about 62%. The activity and selectivity of the catalysts depended on the acid-base properties of the catalysts, and the appropriate amount of acid and base and the ratio of the basic to acidic sites on the catalysts are what govern the performance of the catalysts in the isosynthesis.
