Electrolyte additives can introduce a desired function or can suppress undesired reactions/processes in lithium ion battery electrolytes. There are numerous additives which suppress PC co-intercalation in graphite: Screening-investigations in PC indicate general SEi formation capability. Only a few additives do improve the electrochemical performance in EC-based ("standard") electrolytes. By introducing SEI film forming electrolyte additives in the electrolyte other functionalities may be additionally introduced. These additional functions can be diverse and are not always desired: corrosion, wetting, safety,... Isocyanates a new interesting family of additive compounds Br-BIC shows promising electrochemical performance in EC-based electrolytes and suppresses thermal runaway during overcharge.
