The analysis of solidification in continuous casting requires an understanding of the phenomena occurring on the mold hot face. This information is often deduced from temperature data gathered by subsurface thermocouples. The many complex phenomena occurring on the mold hot face yield temperature information that is often difficult to understand. This paper describes experimental work done with an infrared radiation heat source to understand the stimulus-response relationship between sinusoidal surface heat fluxes and the subsurface thermocouple temperature response. In addition, experiments were done to extract information on individual heat sources that are acting simultaneously.
