During ladle exchanges oxidation of aluminum in steel and entrainment of slag reduces cleanliness of transition slabs. The aim of the present work is to study how tundish furniture design influences ladle transition cleanliness. Flow patterns in a tundish having a turbostop with and without a dam are studied using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Using pulse inputs after ladle changes, inclusion carry through the tundish is studied. The turbostop, which is an excellent piece of furniture for enhanced mixing performance in the tundish, is evaluated for the cleanliness performance. Effects of adding a dam and increasing the shroud submergence are also investigated. It is observed that turbostop does a good job even for smaller inclusions although the shroud submergence plays a significant role on cleanliness.
