The economic benefits of generating a portion of a DR plant's hot reducing gas with the MIDREX OXY+~R partial oxidation system is presented. Three methods of generating reducing gas are described and contrasted; (1) a MIDREX~R Reformer, (2) In-situ reforming, and (3) OXY+~R partial oxidation. For the existing plant, comparison is made between a reformer expansion and an OXY+~R expansion. For the future plant, economic benefits of using OXY+~R with a smaller reformer are compared with a conventional MIDREX plant configuration. Economic payback calculations for each case are determined. In addition, OXY+~R, as it is applied to shaft furnace center injection (patent pending) is briefly described.
