MELT SHOP PROCESS INFORMATION SYSTEM AT SMI-TEXAS

In early 2001, SMI-TX entered into an agreement with AMI-GE to procure their Level 2/3 Melt Shop System. This agreement followed a seven-year effort to internally develop and deploy a data collection and reporting system. As of the summer of 2002, SMI-TX has implemented all modules procured (Scrap Handling, EAF, LMS, QA, and Caster) and is in the process of fine tuning the data collection and reporting relating to the Caster module. The goal of the system was to collect as much automatic information from our existing Process Logic Controllers (PLC) while providing the ability for the operator to easily interact with the system. All information collected must be available for ad hoc reporting and querying as well as standard reporting. Additionally, all information must be available for "auditing" should the PLC or operator information be inaccurate. The system benefits the operation in two main ways. First, all information is available for historical analysis over time. Secondly, and possibly most important, the system provides assistance in performing consistent operating procedures through alloy addition recommendations and caster process notification.
