Indian Charge Chrome Limited (ICCL) a member of the IMFA Group commissioned a 48 MVA stationary, covered and submerged arc furnace specially designed to produce High Carbon Ferro Chrome/ Charge Chrome during March, 1990. During 1999, it was observed that the furnace shell was bulging out near the tap hole zone. This bulge gradually began to increase and soon a gap started to develop between the shell plate and the bottom plate By mid 2001, it became clear that the furnace had to be shut down soon for a complete furnace relining. Since a shut down looked inevitable, based on history and past performance, plans were also drawn up to make other modifications during the relining period with a view to improve furnace availability. This added immensely to the complexity of the entire exercise. While initial planning forecasted a minimum relining period of 75 days, in view of market commitments, a task force was assembled with a mandate to complete the job in 48 days. This paper summarizes the steps taken by IMFA Group in completing not just the entire furnace relining but also all the modifications needed in a period of only 41 days.
