This paper examined the feasibility of the SIMS technique for quantifying oxygen gradients in metal-slag reactions. The dynamic SIMS technique appears to be useful for the system studied. There is evidence that oxygen gradients fluctuate near the edge of reacting iron-aluminum droplets in CaO-SiO_2-Al_2O_3 slag, which is consistent with the idea that surface tension driven flows are responsible for the eventual emulsification of these droplets. Less fluctuation in oxygen at the bottom of the droplet is also consistent with the idea of a wall effect being significant in spontaneous emulsification of droplets.
