The carbonate fuel cell is rapidly marching towards commercialization. A full-scale MW-size demonstration has already been completed during 1996-1997. Commercial market-entry (250kW to multi MW-size) power plants will be demonstrated shortly. The electrolyte matrix is a very important component in carbonate fuel cell because its composition and stability as well as the carbonate electrolyte mixture greatly impact the performance and durability of the carbonate fuel cell. Recent results have further confirmed good long-term phase stability for the Q-LiAlO_2 support material. Significant thermal cycleability enhancement has also been demonstrated in single cells and full-area stacks. Li/Na electrolyte has demonstrated many advantages over Li/K and is gradually being adopted by many developers. These recent findings and developments are review.ed in this paper.
