Design of a Research-scale, High-speed Pilot Coating Machine ― Stage Ⅰ

A high-speed, research-scale coating machine is described in detail. This machine has been designed specifically to address the current drawbacks of poor resolution of printing onto coated papers, and will study in depth the coating structure of the formulations immediately after application onto the paper substrate. A high-resolution camera will monitor changes to the coating layer from application to drying, and this information will be used to develop coatings for enhanced printing performance. All aspects of the coating machine have been described, including the expected Stage Ⅱ of the design and long-term research direction.
