Procedures for Incorporating Uncertainty Information in a Geographical Information System

This paper proposes a method of representing the positional uncertainty of geographical entities in a Geographical Information System. Positions of geographical entities are regarded as fuzzy sets with positional uncertainty represented by the (fuzzy) membership function of each point in space. Two examples of how to represent positional uncertainty are presented: (1) the representation of the water line of a river and (2) the conversion of a line from the raster to the vector data structure.
