With the rapid development of highway in China, the highway network extends gradually to mountainous area, so how to construct subgrade in high intensity earthquake area is paid more and more attention. It is very significant to analyze the seismic stability of subgrade for designing correctly and reasonably so as to decrease the harm of earthquake disaster. Taking example for a steep slope embankment of a highway in mountainous area, the famous finite difference software-FLAC2D5.0-was used to analyze the seismic dynamic response of the embankment. The remarkable problems in geometrical modeling, boundary condition applying, damping selecting and parameters setting, and input earthquake wave’s synthesis, correction and conversion were discussed. The seismic dynamic response of the steep slope embankment was simulated and its seismic stability was analyzed by synthetically considering the distribution and development of dynamic displacement, velocity, acceleration, potential slip surface and dynamic shear stress, etc. Furthermore, some aseismic measures were proposed to enhance the aseismic ability of the embankment. This can be the reference for seismic calculation and aseismic design of similar projects.
