Establishing an Architectural Context for At-grade Facilities of Kaohsiung MRT

At-grade facility is the interface between street and MRT stations. How to establish the architectural context of at-grade facility of Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit (KMRT) system based on local characteristics was the important issue of the architecture section. KMRT is a Build-Operate-Transfer (EOT) project and Kaohsiung Rapid Transit Corporation (KRTC) is the Concession Company selected to execute the concession contract for the construction and operation of the KMRT systems. To control the design quality and to establish the architectural context, the architectural design by KRTC will comply with the functional design criteria completed and approved by KMRT. The functional design criteria contains main design requirements, and also architectural guidelines which displayed the design theme established by the method of public-private participation to control architectonic quality. Individual design architects will follow the criteria and develop designs based on the character of station sites to create a distinctive expression and architectural context for at-grade facilities.
