Open graded asphalt base course with high air voids has been used to a limited extent in airport pavements to prevent reflection cracks, although the Asphalt Institute, USA issued guidelines for crack relief layer during the late eighties as Technical Bulletin 4. This paper describes the use of asphalt mixes for Crack Relief Layer, successfully in a number of medium to very large airport pavement projects, both as a rehabilitation of existing pavements and in new constructions. Details of laboratory and field investigations, construction methods, changes to specifications and case histories of airport pavements have been included.
