A laboratory scale biofilter inoculated thermophilic desulphurization bacteria was applied in the treatment of SO2 with average temperature of 60℃.SO2 can be reduced effectively and the maximum elimination capacity was 48.39 g m-3 h-1.The microbial population formed in the biofilter varied with the operation time.Substrate species and environment condition in the biofilter influenced the microbial population.The oxygen distribution in the packing material was uneven and presented aerobic-anoxic-aerobic states when water-containing rate was over 98%.The microbial population on the packing material changed accordingly.
