摘要

The effect of the drawing strain on the fatigue behaviour of austenitic 304 stainless steel wire has been established. The extent of prior transformation to martensite increases with drawing strain and this promotes more rapid fatigue crack growth. Conversely, this martensite promotes a high resistance to fatigue crack initiation and the threshold stress intensity factor increases with drawing strain. The possibility that martensite is produced in highly drawn wire at the fatigue crack tip during growth is discussed.
