Loss of Control in Flight (LOCIF) has contributed to more transport category accidents than any other single cause in the U.S. It is also the single largest contributor of fatalities in the U.S. and a close second to Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT) worldwide. Many factors contribute to this grim statistic, the most glaring being lack of training in maximum performance characteristics of transport category aircraft and expected pilot responses during an upset (unplanned and unexpected; thus startling) event. Present day training methods in stall recovery scenarios have proven to be ineffective in a variety of accidents and actual upset training is totally lacking in many training syllabuses. There is a pressing need for more realistic training.
