The detection of underlying oil and gas reservoirs using hyperspectral remote sensing relies on the subtle spectral characteristics of the microseeps and surface alteration associated with underlying reservoirs. Microseepages are the vertical movement of hydrocarbons from the reservoir to the surface through networks of fractures, faults and bedding planes. So investigating the hydrocarbon microseepage is a more direct and effect method when we use hyperspectral remote sensing technology to trace oil and gas resources. This paper attempts to identify the hydrocarbon microseepage above reservoirs using Hyperion hyperspectral imagery. The study area locates in the three Park Area of Chaidamu Basin of China. As the Quaternary depositional and subsidence center, the Three Park Area contains huge oil and gas resources. So trying hyperspectral remote sensing technology is a good choice. Based on the hydrocarbon diagnostic spectral features at 1.73um, a hydrocarbon microseepage index was established for the direct detection of the hydrocarbon microseepage. Then using this index, we mapped the hydrocarbon microseepage distribution on the Hyperion imagery and found the mapping result matched the known gas products very well.
