Typically, experimental data on the response of pipelines buried across active faults has focused on the purely static component of lateral deformation and the pressure that this exerts on the pipe. As earthquakes trigger fault movement, experiments exploring the combined effect of faulting and shaking were performed in 1G shaking table tests at the University of Tokyo. A series of tests examine the response of instrumented pipes buried in dry Toyoura sand crossing an idealized strike-slip fault, subjecting the pipes to simultaneous faulting and shaking with implications for pipes crossing active faults, as well as those buried in embankments susceptible to earthquake-induced failure. The experiments explore the implications of different angles at which pipes cross the fault, tire chip backfill and acceleration level on the response of the buried pipes at different magnitudes of fault displacement. Through the analysis of the recorded pipe strains, the effect of these factors on the pipe, allow basic guidelines for pipeline design to be drawn.
