Corrosion of steel transmission structures is costing utility companies millions of dollars each year. For many years utility companies have taken on the attitude of when a structue fails you replace it. This can result in extended line interruptions and added dollars to replace the fallen structures. We currently have over 27,000 transmission steel lattice towers and more than 1600 steel poles. A number of years ago Reliant Energy HL&P implemented an inspection program to collect data concerning the condition of steel structures in our system. Part of this data includes the per cent of rust on each steel structure. The collection of this data is then used to determine if and when it becomes necessary to start painting our steel structures. By gathering this information and reacting to the findings we can extend the life of our steel structures indefinitely.
