As the first approach to the kinetics of the Misubishi copper continuous smelting and converting process, the rates of reactions in the smelting furnace and possible reactions in the converting furnace have been discussed. First, it was computed that copper concentrate particles of 50 mum size dissolve into molten matte in a very short time of less than 1 ms, indicating that the smelting reaction in Mitsubishi process is essentially gas/liquid reaction. This results ina smaller amount of dust generation as compared with Outokumpu-type flash smelting furnace. Second, the formation mechanisms of fayalite slag in the smelting furnace and lime-ferrite slag in the converting furnace have been qualitatively discussed. A quantitative discussion can not be made because of respective difficulties in fluid-flow and mass transport phenomena.
