Fiftieth Anniversary of Group Contractions

Exactly fifty years ago, an article was published defining a specific limit operation for continuous groups, called contraction. The consequences of the operation on the representations were considered with applications to the rotation and Poincare groups. Here, one of the authors, describes the circumstances which led to the genesis of this work.
