In this paper the author makes a personal review of the rapid development of groundwater resources and hydrogeological science in the second half of the 20th century, and speculates upon the major challenges for the first decades of the 21st century, in the light of the recent World Water Forum, Vision Report and Framework for Action. A global perspective is taken, but the southern Africa context is also considered specifically.
