Luminescent thermographic phosphor materials can be used for all-optical non-contact measurements of temperature up to hundreds of ℃ [1]. For example, the green luminescence of the phosphor Y_(2.97)Ce_(0.03)(Al_(1-x)Ga_x)_5O_(12) has a distinct temperature-dependent lifetime in the range of 40-20 ns; the emission peaks between 500-540nm and is easy to detect. We have recently shown that it is possible to monitor temperature of laser-irradiated materials in real time with nanosecond time resolution. These materials could in principle be used as realtime diagnostics for target and ablation-plume temperatures; one can also envision applications in microfluidics and biological studies.
