The convergence of three-dimensional (3D) computer graphics technologies with geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing technologies is creating exciting new applications in geo-spatial visualisation and analysis. Sophisticated software is available to render realistic views of nature and to interact with spatial data intuitively. Interactive perspective viewing and flyby animations increase conceptualisation of remotely sensed or processed data. Advanced 3D modelling tools allow users to model real world surface features such as buildings, bridges, trees, and dams. By using real-world terrain data and satellite imagery, realistic views of landscapes can be generated to visualise current ecosystems and to show the impact of development on the environment. The same tools can be used to visualise the impact of proposed developments by creating and rendering virtual landscapes, or models of terrain that do not (yet) exist. This application is vital in strategic environmental assessment where the potential impact of large-scale development initiatives must be communicated and justified in economic, social, political, and environmental terms.
