At first, office communication was dominated by impact printing technologies like typewriters, daisywheels and dot-matrix printers. But since electrophotography started its triumphant advance in the late 1960s, office communication has become dominated by non-impact printing technologies. Not only the printing technologies but also the applications of paper are changing. Today paper cannot be seen merely as a medium for priming but as part of an integrated solution to meet the customer's demand for his specific application. To understand the technical requirements for office communication papers, we have to analyse the market segments in which the papers are used. The small office/home office sector is dominated by .nkjet technology for monochrome and colour printing. Due to the downward pricing of the printing machines and lower-priced consumables, monochrome and colour desktop laser printers are also penetrating this market. High growth rates can also be seen in multifunctional printing devices mainly based on inkjet technology.
