We investigated the lasing criterion for high-β emitters, when the customarily-used intensity jump and linewidth narrowing are no longer trustworthy. Spectrally-resolved photoluminscence and photon autocorrelation are measured from AlAs/GaAs micropillars containing InGaAs quantum dots and analyzed using cavity-QED. A physically intuitive lasing criterion applicable to all lasers is proposed.
