Bioglasses are extensively used in medical devices, due to their ability to bond to human bone and, if their formulation is properly designed, even to soft tissues. Bioglass? 45S5, which was first proposed by Prof. L.L. Hench in the 1970s, is currently the most popular bioactive glass, due to its excellent response after implantation, proved by an established medical practice [1]. However its application is limited by its relatively poor mechanical properties, especially by its brittleness, which impedes its use in load-bearing implants. To overcome this drawback, Bioglass? 45S5 can be deposited as a bioactive coating on to a tougher substrate, which, in turn, confers the wanted mechanical reliability to the device.
