In surgery, titanium has been established as a suitable implant material with high biocompatibility and corrosion resistance. However, for implants in close proximity to tendons, as in the hand or wrist, the strong adhesion of soft tissue to the implant surface can lead to tenosynovitis or even tendon rupture. The biocompatibility and the attachment of cells to the implant are influenced by the physico-chemical properties of the implant surface. The present work investigates the effect of plasma polymerized coatings from hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) on standard grade 4 titanium implant material as a biocompatible surface coating with the ability to reduce fibroblast adhesion for surgical implants. Human fibroblasts were used to investigate the biological response to the HMDSO modified model surfaces.
