As a marine biomass species to be employed for biorefinery, our group selected kelp due to its largernavailability in Japan and oceans nearby. For utilization of kelp, hydrothermal pretreatment is effective for releasingrnorganics and inorganics in liquid phase so that microorganism used in the following biochemical conversion can getrneasier access to its component. The components will be utilized for value-added oil production, methanernfermentation, and biochemical metal recovery. However, effect of drying and salt on the behavior of organics andrninorganics of the kelp during hydrothermal pretreatment has not been elucidated. Thus, kelp was treatedrnhydrothermally with and without drying treatment and with and without salt. Organic compounds observed includedrnmannitol, formic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid, furfural, and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. Behavior of inorganic kelprncomponent was also determined. Drying did not affect the behavior of kelp. Effect of salt was negligible for organicrncompounds, but inorganic component was affected by salt addition.
