At Karlsruhe’s bioliq®-project, dry biomass is converted into synthetic chemicals and fuels, alsornreferred to as biomass to liquids (BtL). The lignocellulosic biomass is first liquefied by fast pyrolysis in distributedrnregional plants to produce an energy-dense intermediate composed of a viscous bio-oil and a high-energy charrnpowder. Both products are mixed to a suspension to be suitable for long storage periods and more economic transportrnover long distances. As the char particles tend to settle and build solid sediments, the so called Biosyncrude has to bernstirred. Afterwards, the Biosyncrude is converted into synthesis gas through entrained flow gasifier and then byrncatalysis to synthetic fuels or platform chemicals.The purpose of this work is to characterise the char particle settlingrnbehaviour of the mixed Biosyncrudes as function of the height in the test vessel, the temperature, the char particlernsize, the used liquid phase and the used char powders.
