Double Secrecy: An Enhanced Cryptographic Approach for SCADA System Security

Many older supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems were not designed with security in mind because they operated mainly within private networks with proprietary hardware and software. Now, due to the success of the Internet, inespensive off the shelf hardware and software, and freeware technologies, authentication has become a serious challenge. Many of the existing authentication technologies have serious limitations when used with SCADA systems. An innovative authentication framework called double secrecy is presented in this paper. Experimental comparisons show significant improvement in the performance when applying the double secrecy with small or large secret files as compared to SSL/TLS.
