The technology associated with manufacturing of multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC) continues to advance at a rapid pace. Breakthroughs in ceramic dielectric materials and tape casting technologies are enabling commercial production of MLCC with dielectric thickness approaching 1 μm. The adoption of base metal electrode (BME) technology, while posing many challenges, has greatly reduced the cost of manufacturing MLCC with hundreds of electrodes and dielectric layers. In this paper, we discuss the technical challenges of producing 10 μF 1206 X5R type MLCC using nickel electrodes and how they have been overcome. The product contains over 300 dielectric layers each approximately 3 μm in thickness. The electrical performance and reliability of this product is also discussed.
