Defect free supported zeolite membranes are typically made with thickness of 5...10 μm. The most common synthesis method is colloidal deposition of a thin seed layer of zeolite crystals, followed by secondary growth into a continuous membrane. Reducing zeolite membrane thickness to <1 μm will increase permeance, reduce fabrication time and improve thermo-chemical stability. However, reducing the thickness also significantly increases the probability of connected meso/macro-pore defects [1] which might diminish the selectivity.
