The separation of CO_2 from natural gas at industrially relevant conditions is a very important environmental and energy issue. From the environmental point of view, it is, important to separate and recycle CO_2 before it is released into the air, to alleviate the emission of greenhouse gases. Also, CO_2 reduces the energy content of natural gas and acidic, corrosive in the presence of water. Although polymeric membranes such as cellulose acetate, polyimide and polyaramide can separate CO_2 from CH_4, the high CO_2 pressures plasticize them and decrease their separation ability considerably.
