The article presents a recently developed approach to solve economic dispatch problem with co-generation units using bare bones teaching learning based optimization algorithm. Some non-linearities are considered. The primary objective of economic dispatch with co-generation units is to determine optimal allocation of power and generation of heat within operating limits such that the combined cost is minimum. In this article the teaching learning based optimization (TLBO) technique variant bare bones TLBO has been applied for solving proposed problem with linear and non-linear constraints. Traditional TLBO has two phases. In first phase learners improve their knowledge by absorbing teacher’s knowledge and in second phase by sharing knowledge with themselves. The results obtained are compared with existing techniques hence proves superiority of the proposed algorithm.
